If you are using a Google Workspace account and cannot find the “Buy Storage” button in Google Drive, Gmail, or Google One, your account type is functioning as designed. Individual Workspace users cannot purchase individual storage upgrades. Unlike personal @gmail.com accounts, Workspace accounts draw from an organization-wide pooled storage quota managed centrally by your IT administrator through the Google Admin Console.
Quick Answer
The “Buy Storage” button does not exist for individual Workspace users because storage cannot be bought via Google One. Storage must be increased centrally by a Workspace administrator. The admin can either raise your individual Organizational Unit (OU) storage limit or buy domain-wide capacity via Billing > Get more services > Google Workspace Additional Storage.
Why the “Buy Storage” Option Is Missing
In personal Google accounts, clicking “Storage” takes you directly to Google One, where you can link a personal credit card to add 100 GB, 2 TB, or more.
Google Workspace operates on a fundamentally different model:
- Centralized Billing: Organizations require centralized control over data ownership, billing, and retention. Letting individual employees add personal storage tiers would fragment billing and create compliance risks.
- Pooled Storage Architecture: Workspace pools all storage across the organization. For example, if a company has 50 Business Standard users (each providing 2 TB), the entire domain shares a single 100 TB pool.
- Admin-Enforced Ceilings: Even if the organization has 50 TB of free pooled space, an individual user will see a “Storage limit reached” warning if their administrator has assigned a 15 GB policy limit to their Organizational Unit (OU).
If you are a Workspace user who has hit their quota, clicking storage prompts will simply show your usage breakdown with no purchase link available.
Step 1: User-Side Action (What to Do If You Are Not an Admin)
If you are an end user and need immediate relief without administrator intervention, you have two options: clean up files or formally request a quota adjustment.
Check What Is Actually Consuming Your Quota
Open drive.google.com/drive/quota to view your files sorted by size.
- Purge large personal media: Look for raw video footage, system backups, and zipped archives.
- Empty your Trash bin: Deleting a file moves it to the Trash, where it continues consuming your quota for 30 days unless manually purged. Open Trash and click Empty trash. See Why Drive Trash is still counting against your quota if your meter does not decrease.
- Check for Orphaned Files: If your visible folders look empty but your usage remains high, files that lost their folder directories might still be tied to your account. Run a search for
is:unorganized owner:meto expose them.
Request an OU Limit Increase
Contact your Google Workspace administrator or help desk. Provide them with your current usage and explain that your account has hit the assigned policy cap. Admins can adjust your individual limit in minutes without spending additional money, provided the organization has available pooled storage.
Step 2: Administrator Fix (Resolving the Missing Storage for Users)
If you are a Google Workspace administrator, you have two distinct paths depending on whether your domain has available pooled capacity or has completely exhausted its global storage.
Path A: The Domain Has Space, but the User Is Capped
- Log in to the Google Admin Console.
- Go to Storage.
- Under the main overview, check your organization-wide usage. If your organization is using 30 TB of 100 TB, your pool is healthy.
- Click Storage settings or User storage limit.
- Select the user’s Organizational Unit (OU) from the directory tree on the left.
- Adjust the storage limit upward (or toggle it to No limit if internal policy permits) and click Save.
If the user was assigned to an OU with a restrictive cap, their upload blocks will clear shortly after saving.
Path B: The Entire Organization Has Exhausted Its Pooled Storage
If your main Admin Console storage meter is full, raising OU limits will not resolve the issue. You must add capacity to the domain pool:
- In the Admin Console, go to Billing > Get more services.
- Click Google Workspace add-ons.
- Locate the Google Workspace Additional Storage card and click Get started.
- Choose how many 10 TB storage packs your organization requires.
- Select your payment schedule (monthly flexible or annual) and complete the checkout.
Each 10 TB pack is added directly to your domain’s shared pool and becomes available across all Organizational Units.
What If the “Get More Services” Option Is Also Missing?
If you are a Super Admin and you cannot find the option to purchase storage add-ons in your Admin Console, check your domain’s subscription channel:
- Reseller-Managed Accounts: If you purchase your Google Workspace licenses through a third-party reseller (such as CDW, Promevo, or a regional cloud partner), direct self-service purchases via Google are often disabled. You must contact your reseller directly to add storage add-on SKUs to your monthly invoice.
- Legacy Subscriptions: Certain legacy G Suite accounts (such as G Suite Free Edition or older business tiers) must transition to a modern Google Workspace tier (Business Starter, Standard, Plus, or Enterprise) before Google Workspace Additional Storage add-on packs become available.
- Workspace for Education: Education domains have distinct storage structures. If your school has hit its limit, review Fix: “Storage limit reached” for Workspace for Education.
If storage exhaustion has led to service suspensions across multiple accounts, consult Fix: “Account suspended due to storage” (Admin Triage) for emergency recovery steps.
