Troubleshooting WhatsApp Backup storage in Google Drive

If your Google Drive suddenly reports that it is out of space, or if WhatsApp displays an error stating “Backup paused: not enough Google Drive storage,” your messaging data is filling your account. Historically, WhatsApp backups on Android did not count against personal Google Drive storage limits. However, Google and WhatsApp have phased out that exemption. WhatsApp chat histories, photos, and video archives now count directly against your shared 15 GB Google account quota.

Quick Answer

Open WhatsApp on your phone, go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup, and toggle off Include videos to immediately reduce future backup size. To manage or remove existing backup data, open Google Drive on a computer, navigate to Settings > Manage Apps, scroll down to WhatsApp Messenger, and select Delete hidden app data.

Why WhatsApp Backups Now Consume Google Storage

Under the updated Google storage policy, WhatsApp backups on Android behave like any other file:

  • The backup draws from your pooled storage pool shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos.
  • If your Google account hits its 15 GB ceiling (or the capacity of your paid Google One tier), WhatsApp halts automated nightly backups.
  • An active WhatsApp backup does not show up as a standard file in “My Drive.” It is stored inside an isolated, encrypted application container.

Because the data is hidden, many users assume their storage is being consumed by phantom Drive files or unreceived emails. For issues where storage issues cause delivery blocks in your inbox, consult Fix: “You have run out of storage” in Gmail but Drive empty.

Where Storage Disappears:
15 GB Google Account Quota:
├── Gmail & Photos: 6.0 GB
├── Visible Drive Files: 1.0 GB
└── Hidden WhatsApp Data: 8.0 GB <-- Often contains years of uncompressed video

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting and Reduction

Step 1: Strip Videos from the WhatsApp Backup

Videos shared in group chats and direct messages account for the vast majority of WhatsApp backup weight. Removing them from the cloud upload solves most storage failures without losing your text history.

  1. Open WhatsApp on your Android device.
  2. Tap the three vertical dots in the top right > Settings.
  3. Select Chats > Chat backup.
  4. Scroll to the bottom and toggle off Include videos.
  5. Tap the green Back Up button to run a new, smaller backup immediately. This will overwrite the previous bloated cloud snapshot with a much smaller, text-and-photo-only database.

Step 2: Use WhatsApp’s On-Device Storage Manager

Before deleting backups in the cloud, clear heavy forwarded media directly from your phone’s database.

  1. In WhatsApp, go to Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage.
  2. Review the Larger than 5 MB section at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap into this category, select obsolete videos, memes, and transferred documents, and tap the Trash icon to delete them.
  4. Review Forwarded many times to remove viral media that has been duplicated across your conversations.
  5. Return to Chat backup and run a fresh backup.

To clear cached application data that may be lingering on your device operating system, follow How to Clear Google Drive “System Data” Bloat (Mobile).

Step 3: Inspect or Delete the Backup via Google Drive

Because WhatsApp saves data to a protected application partition, you cannot browse individual messages or download photos through the Google Drive web interface. However, you can check its exact size and delete the archive if necessary.

  1. Open a desktop browser and navigate to drive.google.com.
  2. Click the Settings gear in the top-right corner > select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand menu, click Manage Apps.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the list to find WhatsApp Messenger.
  5. Below the app title, you will see a note showing the storage volume (e.g., “Stored data: 6.8 GB”).
  6. If you want to purge the backup entirely to free up immediate account space, click the Options button to the right and select Delete hidden app data.
Google Drive > Settings > Manage Apps:
[App Name] [Status] [Action]
WhatsApp Messenger Hidden app data: 6.8 GB Options ▼ -> Delete hidden app data

Warning: Deleting this data removes your cloud restore point. If you lose or switch phones, you will not be able to recover your chat history from Google Drive unless you run a fresh backup first.

Step 4: Resolving the “Backup Stuck at 99%” Glitch

If your Google Drive has plenty of space, but the WhatsApp backup freezes indefinitely near completion:

  • The Cause: A corrupted media attachment or an interrupted handshake with Google Play Services.
  • The Fix:
    1. Go to your phone’s Settings > Apps > Google Play Services > Storage > Clear Cache.
    2. In your phone’s settings, go to Accounts > Google, tap your account, and verify that account synchronization is not paused.
    3. Temporarily switch your connection from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or vice versa) in WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Back up over.

If you decide to keep your complete chat history including high-definition videos, you may simply need to expand your overall cloud quota; see Fix: “Quota Exceeded” but you have a 2TB Plan for plan configurations.
